If you’ve been thinking about hiring an apprentice but are concerned about the cost, now is the time to take a closer look at the financial support available. Backed by the Australian Government, a range of apprenticeship incentives are now in place to support salon owners in training the next generation of hairdressers and barbers.
Bringing on an apprentice is one of the most powerful ways to future-proof your salon and strengthen our industry. But we understand it’s more than a feel-good decision—it’s a serious investment of time, money, and mentoring. From wages and tools to hands-on training, employing an apprentice can stretch your resources.
That’s why understanding what financial incentives for apprenticeships you’re eligible for is so important. As of July 2024, new government support measures are making it easier—and more affordable—than ever to take on and train an apprentice.
Whether you’re a solo operator stepping into a leadership role or running an established salon, these payments are designed to ease the pressure so you can focus on developing talent, building confidence, and shaping the future of our profession.
This guide breaks down the latest apprenticeship funding and employer support in plain English, so you can make informed choices and access the help you deserve.
What Support Is Available?
There are three key incentives available through the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System.
1. Priority Hiring Incentive
Receive up to $5,000 in the first 12 months of an apprenticeship
If your apprentice is completing a Certificate III or higher in an occupation listed on the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List, you may be eligible for:
- Full-time apprentices:
$2,000 after 6 months and $3,000 after 12 months
- Part-time apprentices:
$1,000 after 6 months and $1,500 after 12 months
Please note:
You cannot receive this incentive if you are already claiming the Priority Wage Subsidy or the Disability Australian Apprentice Wage Support (DAAWS) for the same apprentice.
2. Disability Australian Apprentice Wage Support (DAAWS)
Weekly payment of $104.30 if your apprentice has a diagnosed disability
To be eligible:
- Your apprentice must have a long-term or permanent disability
- A registered doctor or psychologist must complete the assessment
- Apprentices under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the assessment
This payment is designed to assist with the additional costs of employing and supporting apprentices with disability.
3. GTO Reimbursement Program
For Group Training Organisations only
If you are a GTO placing an apprentice with a small or medium business that has not used a GTO in the past two years, you may be eligible for:
- $100 per week over 52 weeks, up to $5,200 in total
This amount must be passed on to the salon by reducing your standard service fees.
